Since their invention, railroads have captured the imagination of people of all ages and played a pivotal role in the industrial development of our world. Nowhere was the effect greater than in America. Railroads grew into the backbone of the nation and their stories are full of folklore and legends of American History. This extraordinary DVD presentation takes viewers to popular steam locomotive powered historic railroads featured on the PBS series America's Historic Steam Railroads. Feature railroads include: Georgetown Loop Railroad - Located in the Colorado Rockies, this narrow-gauge railroad features tight turns, steep grades and fantastic mountain trestles, making the Georgetown Loop Railroad one of the most spectacular trains in the world. Grand Canyon Railroad - Orginally opened in 1901 by Santa Fe Railroad, the line was built to make the trip to canyon as easy as possible and draw visitors to the spectacular sights of the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Roaring Camp & Big Trees Narrow-gauge Railroad - Northern California's Roaring Camp & Big Trees Railroad takes the passengers back to the historic logging days when great steam locomotives carried giant redwood logs from the forest to saw mill. California Western Railroad - Operating for over 100 years between Fort Bragg on the coast and inland valley town of Willits, the "Skunk Train", as it is known, takes visitors on a 40 mile trip past towering redwoods and mountain meadows of the beautiful northern California countryside. Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad - From desert valley to rocky mountain passes, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is the longest and highest narrow gauge steam railroad in America and registered National Historic Site.

Limiteds, Locals, and Expresses in Indiana, 1838-1971 by Craig Sanders,
Limiteds, Locals, and Expresses in Indiana, 1838-1971 by Craig Sanders,
The passenger train has long held a special place in the imagination of Americans, and Indiana was once a bustling passenger train crossroads. Limiteds, Locals, and Expresses in Indiana, 1838-1971 brings to life the countless locals, accommodation trains, and secondary expresses that Hoosiers patronized during the Golden Age of the passenger train. Craig Sanders gives us a comprehensive history of intercity passenger service in Indiana, from the time railroads began to develop in the state in the mid-19th century through May 1, 1971, when Amtrak began operations. Each chapter summarizes the history and development of one railroad, discusses the factors that shaped that railroad's passenger service--such as prolonged financial difficulties, competition, and the influence of a strong leader--and concludes with a detailed account of its passenger operations in Indiana. Sixteen maps. 87 photographs, and other evocative illustrations supplement Sanders's text.

Federal Express (passenger train) - The Federal Express was a passenger train run by the Pennsylvania Railroad and New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad between Washington, DC's Union Station and Boston, Massachusetts's South Station. At different times, its route has taken it across the Hudson River via a car float between Port Morris and Jersey City (the ferry Maryland), the Poughkeepsie Bridge, and finally the Pennsylvania Tunnel and Terminal Railroad.

Prospector (passenger train) - The Prospector was a named passenger train operated by the Denver & Rio Grande Western railroad between Denver, Colorado and Salt Lake City, Utah. The train was inaugurated on November 17 1941.

Hiawatha (passenger train) - The Hiawatha were named passenger trains operated by the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad (also known as the Milwaukee Road), and traveled from Chicago to the Twin Cities in Minnesota.

Short-line railroad - A short line is an independent railroad company that operates over a relatively short distance. Short lines generally exist for one of three reasons: to link two industries requiring rail freight together (for example, a gypsum mine and a wall board factory, or a coal mine and a power plant); to interchange revenue traffic with other, usually larger, railroads; or to operate a tourist passenger train service.
